Lou Llobell’s Gaal Takes Center Stage in Foundation S3

Apple TV+ has released a new trailer for the third season of its Star Wars-like Foundation sci-fi series, based on Isaac Asimov’s sprawling series of books. Showcasing a brand-new crisis for the galaxy, new villain(s), and the show’s penchant for big ideas, bold sci-fi concepts, and bombastic visuals, the trailer for season 3 has already left viewers excited, with a lot to look forward to, set for July 2025.

For fans of the previous seasons, the series has established a new antagonist for the upcoming installment, as one of Asimov’s most powerful and mysterious figures: The Mule. The series has continued to change some of its core story beats, compared to Asimov’s novels, though, with the premise continuing to jump forward by the century.

In contrast to the first season’s 138-year gap, the second installment focused on the aftermath of the Second Crisis, which saw war on the horizon between the Foundation and the established Galactic Empire, the former of which had taken a more radical turn with its weaponized use of religion to increase its influence. The season also introduced a secretive new colony of psychic humans known as “The Mentalics.”

With season 3 jumping ahead by another 152 years, the third season will focus on what is known as the Third Crisis in Asimov’s original Foundation books. “The Foundation is now a much more established and influential power than it once was. But the once-mighty Cleonic Dynasty is starting to lose its grip,” reads Apple TV+’s official description for season 3. “Beset by foes, seen and unseen, the two are no match for the threat of annihilation: the arrival of a warlord with unlimited military might and the power to control minds at will.”

A new battle rages on in the trailer, as Hari Seldon’s (Jared Harris) narration reminds us of humanity’s unique plight. “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point,” he intones. “We’re out of time,” a more in-charge Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) warns.

Who, or what, is The Mule? Pilou Asbæk (of “Fortnite” fame) steps into the role of the new, more mysterious threat to the galaxy, a man who is more than just a warlord, it seems. “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love,” Asbæk’s character ominously boasts. “It only takes a little nudge.”

Heavy on action, explosions, and skyscrapers toppling to the ground, the trailer showcases how “The Mule” will threaten the galaxy and give Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) more of a hero’s arc. But a new battle is upon the characters, and the Mule will force two of the galaxy’s greatest superpowers to at least be on speaking terms: the Empire and the Foundation.

Series regulars Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann are all set to reprise their roles as the three immortal clones: Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk. Jared Harris will also reprise his lead role as Hari Seldon, with Lou Llobell and Laura Birn also set to return as Gaal Dornick and the powerful, mysterious android, Eto Demerzel.

A Bigger Cast For Season 3

In addition to reprises and main cast members, Apple TV+ is making some big, notable changes to Foundation with season 3, with an expanded roster of new, recognizable characters, including Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, a passionate and self-trained devotee of Hari Seldon’s work and self-taught psychohistorian; Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, who leads a planet of psychics; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent. Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, and Leo Bill are also joining the cast, as Han Pritcher, Bayta Mallow, Toran Mallow, the flamboyant Magnifico Giganticus, Song, and Mayor Indbur.

Psychohistory in Crisis

Psychohistory, a fictional concept by Asimov, is a scientific field of “mathematics and sociology” used to predict the “future of very large groups of people.” It’s the main method of extrapolating the future of entire planets, empires, and galaxies in the first few seasons of Foundation. However, the Mule’s character, a charismatic villain with the ability to manipulate the emotions of entire planets, puts both the theoretical and social models for psychohistory at risk.

The season 3 trailer is a visual treat, but it hits some emotionally powerful notes in terms of both building tension and raising questions. Can the Empire and the Foundation work together? Can the conceptualization of psychohistory survive under such an existential attack? Is there a future where the galaxy isn’t constantly on the brink of collapse?

Apple TV+ has set a brand new release date for season 3, with a premiere on July 11, and new episodes released weekly through September 12. It will be a treat for those who loved the science fiction and big-budget thrillers of seasons 1 and 2.

For fans of season 3, the series is looking like a truly unique test case for Asimov’s premise. In previous seasons, building the pieces of Seldon’s plan was the name of the game. In the third season, will that plan be able to survive, in the face of the galaxy’s new and frightening reality? The arrival of The Mule may not only signal a challenge to galactic peace, but also to the very concept that the future can be anticipated with any degree of certainty.
