Strange New Worlds S3 Brings Bigger Space Battles

Paramount+ has released the first official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. The official trailer, released in early April, had to tide fans over until the third season’s new episodes premiere on July 17, 2025.

Season 2’s season finale ends with the Gorn brutally attacking a Federation colony world while the U.S.S. Enterprise is invading in support of the Federation forces. Amid the chaos, some of the crew are taken hostage along with other survivors. Starfleet issues a directive for the Enterprise to retreat and abandon the hostages. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) is then left to make a difficult choice between following Starfleet’s directive or following his instincts to try and save the hostages. As expected, he chooses the latter.

The new season 3 trailer opens with a recap of a clip shown at New York City Comic-Con in October. The footage begins with the Enterprise trapped in an intense space battle, one of the series’ go-to set pieces, against waves of Gorn attacks. The trailer then promises to pick up where the season 2 finale ended, moving toward a resolution of the ongoing war with the Gorn and offering a glimpse into new and unique challenges on the horizon.

The Enterprise crew is once again under Captain Pike’s command as they deal with the fallout from the latest Gorn war. Fans will see the end of the Gorn storyline in the new season but also a brand-new villain who will test the Enterprise crew in new and exciting ways. According to Paramount+, these threats will test the crew’s sense of faith and duty as well as their skills, courage, and endurance. The cast will also get a new addition, as we see in the new trailer, in the form of Cillian O’Sullivan.

Paramount+ also notes that there will be a lot more variety in terms of episode genres compared to other Star Trek series. While fans will still get plenty of typical Trek episodes, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is venturing outside of the franchise’s comfort zone with a mix of episodes about faith, honor, loyalty, love, duty, romance, comedy, and even a bit of murder mystery.

The trailer teases new guest stars, including Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. Both comedians have known on-screen chemistry with Paul Wesley, as the four previously worked together on Wubbanub, a 2014 Amazon comedy series. The April trailer teaser had mentioned that the upcoming season was filled with unique side stories, including moments of friendship, romance, even a little murder mystery. The official trailer offers more glimpses into the side stories Strange New Worlds’ season 3 will focus on. As the crew is busy dealing with the Gorn and trying to free their new hostages, they also seem to have some downtime for bonding moments like drinking “galactic ale” together.

For Spock (Ethan Peck), the Enterprise seems to be a little more complicated, romance-wise. In the trailer, he appears to be stealing a moment with Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) as they look through an enlarged heart picture. However, both Nurse Chapel and Spock are interrupted by Pike. Spock’s peace is further disrupted by Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan). In the Star Trek universe, Korby was first played by Michael Strong in Star Trek: The Original Series. In Strange New Worlds’ continuity, Korby is known to be a medical archaeologist who happens to be Chapel’s long-lost fiancé. His return and new status as Chapel’s boss are definitely going to be an added source of tension for both Chapel and Spock.

The third season will also feature guest appearances from Patton Oswalt and Rhys Darby. The April teaser hinted at everything from action to side stories, including lighter and humorous moments. The new trailer also expands upon that theme, showing the crew’s camaraderie, a not-so-secret relationship, and another character possibly exploding.

In what is likely to be a pivotal moment for the main characters, James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is given the chance to captain the ship for a short time. The choice is taken from Pike, who steps down to let Kirk sit in the captain’s seat to gain experience, though the full situation is not entirely clear in the preview. However, Pike does let Kirk know that while he is in the chair, the decisions he makes are his alone. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
