Nine teenagers are in custody for the June 24 shooting death of Trey Dean Wright, 16, of Johnsonville, South Carolina. The shooting, the result of what authorities described as an argument “over a girl,” was also allegedly videotaped, in part, by one of the shooters, according to a law enforcement source.
Florence County deputies found Wright’s body on First Neck Road, shot multiple times, on June 24. The rural road where the teen was found is located approximately 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, deputies arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, South Carolina, and charged him with murder for allegedly shooting Wright after a prolonged argument.
Florence County law enforcement has also charged five other teens in the shooting. Prosecutors also charged three additional teens in the shooting, all of them from the Myrtle Beach area, as adults. They face murder charges.
Authorities alleged the six others lured Wright to a remote location where Raper was waiting, despite knowing he was armed and had threatened the victim. They arrested 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher, of Myrtle Beach, on July 25, charging her with being an accessory before the fact. Prosecutors charged Wright’s girlfriend with bringing Raper to the scene and allegedly knowing that he had a firearm and was likely to use it in violence.
Prosecutors Charged 5 Teens as Adults in Teen Killing
According to Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, “The other codefendants conspired in bringing Raper to the location. They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn said. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
In South Carolina, teens can be tried as adults in some cases, including when a person under 18 has committed a crime such as murder. Officials confirmed that five of the suspects were charged as adults.
Nunn told WBTW-TV, “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals.”
Three other teens in the Myrtle Beach area were subsequently charged with murder as well. They were 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. Prosecutors in South Carolina can charge multiple defendants in the same crime as adults when the actions of an individual are legally assigned to each suspect under state law.
Sheriff T.J. Joye of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Sheriff Joye said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He remains in custody without bond. Kendall also faces a murder charge and is being held without bond. Belviso and Kearns posted a $20,000 surety bond last week.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office and prosecutors have not elaborated further on the case and declined to comment. The case is still open, and the Sheriff’s Office said it will not provide additional details to the public, citing the investigation.
The death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright has continued to have a ripple effect in Florence County. His mother, Ashley Lindsey, still publicly mourns her loss while also venting about the court hearings that she has to attend. She was unaware of a few of the teens who were in custody and hurt because she had been betrayed by several of her son’s friends.
The shooting has also raised questions in the community about teenage arguments, peer pressure, and access to guns. The dispute between two teenagers turned violent and deadly, and nine others are now facing criminal charges as well.
